Your Android Is About to Stop Being Yours - Keep Android Open
In August 2025, Google announced that future versions of Android would restrict app installations to those published by verified developers, meaning users would no longer be able to freely install unverified apps as they had in the past.
After community concerns, Google introduced a new developer option on March 19, 2026, allowing advanced users to freely install apps as usual after completing multiple configuration steps, waiting 24 hours, and confirming numerous warnings.
This feature is implemented through Google Play Services, not the Android operating system itself. Therefore, Google can change, tighten, or remove related features at any time without updating the operating system.

Federal Bill Would Require OS-Level Age Verification Across the U.S.
If the bill is passed, users may be required to provide personal information to verify their age before accessing the operating system. Collecting personal information at the operating system level could increase privacy and security risks, as a centralized age verification system could become a target for unauthorized access or misuse.
